What is it?
The Presbyterian Hospital Community Care Cruiser is a 40-foot recreational vehicle that will serve as a doctor's office and provide comprehensive primary and preventive medical care to youth who cannot afford it.
The cruiser will be led by a medical director, pediatric nurse practitioner, nursing staff and social worker and will visit identified underserved areas of the community to offer the following pediatric services:
- Developmental screening
- Primary care
- Immunizations
- Initial prenatal care
- Disease diagnosis
- Preventive education
- Asthma prevention and treatment
- Community resource referrals
Patient records will be maintained and updated, which will allow Presbyterian to provide a continuum of care by establishing a medical history and opportunity for follow-up.
Why is it needed?
Nationwide, the workforce is suffering from a reduction or elimination of benefits. In fact, one in nine children in North Carolina lack health insurance, and more than 37,000 are on the list for subsidies.
The Cruiser will create a win-win situation for the entire community by descreasing non-reimbursed costs and unnecessary ER visits, and by improving the health of our youth.
How will it work?
Presbyterian Hospital will collaborate with interested parties to ensure the best possible resource is put into place.
The Cruiser will work with places of worship, schools and other support groups to promote the clinic and provide easy access for youth who need its services.
Presbyterian Hospital will work with its Parish Nursing Program to establish strong working relationships in the communities we already serve. Through this collaborative effort we believe we will maximize our impact.
Four times a year, the Cruiser will dedicate a day to provide required immunizations for school-age youth.
How can I support it?
Many partnership and donor opportunities are available through Presbyterian Hospital Foundation. After all, the Cruiser's potential can only be maximized through community-wide support.
Currently, Presbyterian Hospital is proud to have the support of the following partners:
- Duke Endowment
- Foundation for the Carolinas
-
Charlotte Bobcats
